‘Golden Compass’ May Be Biggest Fantasy Since Narnia
The Golden Compass is the newest fantasy movie that has been dubbed the next greatest thing since Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia. In the movie ‘Gobblers’ go around the world kidnapping children in order to suppress their free will. There is only one young girl who has the power to avoid them and to see the true world that she lives in through a golden compass. There are many who fear the things that she can now accomplish and in her quest to escape and defeat these people she makes friends – Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) and polar bears being the few – who help her to complete her journey.
Can “Compass,” based on the first part of Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” series, launch a “Lord of the Rings”-style trilogy despite some claiming that the film is anti-religion? It definitely has the potential. The graphics surrounding the movie (there are a lot) were done spectacular and may have convinced a few of us that polar bears could really talk. The storyline is also unique enough to attract both the younger and the older generation. Not many of can resist a good fantasy movie – especially with such popular actors like Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
Of course there are some flaws to the movie. The part in the movie where the young actress (main character) in the movie finds out that her uncle is really dad makes you think that the young actress in the film is either a bad actor or the director just didn’t think it was important. Most of us would have been freaking out if we found out that news.
There are some good action scenes – especially between the two daemons in the movie. Daemons are humans whose souls have the ability to turn into animals.
While it may not be the most brilliant movie to be released it is still something that everyone will enjoy.
