‘Tropic Thunder’ has managed to hold on to the top spot at the box office despite all the buzz and hype surrounding the 2008 Olympics. ‘The House Bunny’ came in at No. 2 - which was a bit of a surprise for many of us.

Ben Stiller’s action satire grossed a very nice $16.1 mil on a slight 38 percent drop, raising its two-week sum to a sweet $65.7 mil. It’s just the third movie of the summer to repeat at No. 1 (after Iron Man and The Dark Knight), the fifth film of the year to do so (21 and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! also managed the feat), and the first R-rated flick of 2008 to return as champ.

Anna Faris’ Playboy-infused college comedy, The House Bunny, was next, with a sexy $15.1 mil gross, thanks to a crowd that was three-quarters female and two-thirds under the age of 25. All of which is pretty cool, but the fact that the ladies awarded the film a just-okay B+ CinemaScore means that its long-term box-office prospects aren’t so hot.

Elsewhere, The Dark Knight (No. 4 with $10.3 mil), which at $489.2 mil is now within Bat-spitting distance of the $500 mil domestic mark, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (No. 5 with $5.7 mil) rounded out the top five. New releases The Longshots (No. 8 with $4.3 mil, despite a solid A CinemaScore) and The Rocker (No. 12 with $2.8 mil) lived up to their low expectations.

For those of you who think you will never see the new ‘Harry Potter’ don’t worry. Warner Bros. is trying to appease those fans who have been sending angry comments their way concerning the delay of the next ‘Harry Potter’ film.

The president of the studio, Alan Horn, released a statement explaining that the decision was not taken lightly, and even pointed out a silver lining. With the sixth film, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,” pushed back until June, fans won’t have to wait as long between it and the seventh (and final) flick, scheduled for a November 2010 release.

As far as silver linings go, this one is stretching it, especially if the last film gets delayed as well. But the fact that a studio president responded to online grumbling is, in and of itself, news.

“The Rocker” opened in theatres this week starring Rainn Wilson (The Office). He plays Robert Fishman a 41 year old man who still acts and tries to dress like a teenage rocker. Twenty years before Fishman was in a hair metal band called Vesuvius until the band traded him for the nephew of a label record executive and eventually signed a contract.

Fired from his dead-end boring desk job, Fishman has no alternative but to move in the attic of his sister’s (Jane Lynch) house. Living with his judgmental sister and her more sympathetic husband (Jeff Garlin) and their disapproving nerdy son, Matt (Josh Gad) is no consolation. That is until one day Matt asks him for a favor: to immediately replace the drummer of a rock band to which he belongs, as the group is to perform at the high school prom.

Fish reluctantly joins the band, funnily titled A.D.D. There he finds lead singer, frontman and heartthrob Curtis (played by real-life singer Teddy Geiger), quasi-punk bassist Amelia (“Superbad’s” Emma Stone) and of course, Matt. Their union delivers a not so impressive performance on the big night; however, Fish promises them the star and the moon, meaning a real club gig and they stick together.

Fishman can’t resist letting go of the old habit of the golden heavy metal days, like the pocket full of puke as a lucky charm or rehearsing completely naked. So, we have the band rehearsing via Webcam and Fishman drumming without any cloths on, and the video of him leaks to YouTube, obviously. Even though this stunt was meant to bring him embarrassment, “the naked drummer” wakes up with a manager eager to rep him, (Jason Sudeikis) and a proposal from the same record label Vesuvius signed their contract, so A.D.D.’s popularity takes off.

The main flaw of the movie represents the music A.D.D. plays. It is the same superficial, non-impressive thing we hear on the radio. Even Geiger confessed that he had trouble getting accustomed to singing that kind of music. Overall, “The Rocker” is entertaining, unpredictable and funny enough to chill and cheer a summer evening.

20th Century Fox stated this week that they will be seeking an injunction to block the release of the new Warner Bros. movie the “Watchmen”. A Los Angeles court ruled a copyright lawsuit to go forward against Warner Bros.

The movie about raffish, flawed superheroes - which has already been shot - is slated for release on March 6, said Warner Bros spokesman Scott Roe. The highly anticipated film, with a budget believed to be about $120 million, is based on a 1980s DC Comics graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons.

In his decision released last week, Judge Gary Feess of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California wrote that Fox could hold some of the rights to the material, even if it did not hold all rights. Fox argues it acquired motion picture rights to the “Watchmen” graphic novel in the last 1980s, and that even though it relinquished certain rights to the material in 1991 it held onto the right to distribute the first movie.

“We will be asking the court to enforce Fox’s copyright interests in “The Watchmen” and enjoin the release of the Warner Brothers film and any related ‘Watchmen’ media that violate our copyright interests in that property,” said Fox spokesman Gregg Brilliant.

“The Watchmen” is directed by Zack Snyder, who made the 2007 hit movie “300.” The film is based on edgy material and takes an unorthodox approach to the superhero movie by focusing on flawed antiheroes. Scott Rowe, a spokesman for Warner Bros, said the ruling only means that the case will go forward.

“The judge did not opine at all on the merits, other than to conclude that Fox satisfied the pending requirements,” Rowe said. “We respectfully disagree with Fox’s position and do not believe they have any rights in and to this project.” Feess’ ruling was issued on Wednesday, in response to Warner Bros’ request to have the case dismissed. Warner Bros made the request after Fox sought an injunction against release of “Watchmen.”

‘The Dark Knight’ has been leading the box office for weeks now with no prospect of dropping to the second spot. The only one who could have the chance to beat Batman down would be the hilarious comedy directed and starred by none other then Ben Stiller.

The DreamWorks-Paramount comedy “Tropic Thunder” with Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Tom Cruise debuted at No. 1 with $26 million, bumping “The Dark Knight” to second place after four weekends on top, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Warner Bros. Batman flick pulled in $16.8 million to raise its total to $471.5 million. “The Dark Knight” passed the original “Star Wars” ($461 million) and now stands as No. 2 on the all-time domestic charts, behind only “Titanic” ($600.8 million). Taking inflation into account, “The Dark Knight” trails both movies in actual tickets sold, however. “The Dark Knight” would need to gross about $900 million to match the number of admissions for “Titanic” and about $1.2 billion to equal “Star Wars.”

Warner Bros. expects “The Dark Knight” to top out at about $530 million domestically, said Dan Fellman, the studio’s head of distribution. “The Dark Knight” managed to fend off another “Star Wars” movie this weekend. The animated tale “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” also released by Warner Bros., opened at No. 3 with $15.5 million.

Families made up two-thirds of the audience for “Clone Wars,” Fellman said. “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, who has an executive producer credit on “Clone Wars,” intended the movie as an introduction to his “Clone Wars” TV show debuting this fall on the Cartoon Network.

“It was targeted to a specific audience for specific reasons,” Fellman said. “We accomplished that mission, and it will continue in another medium.” “Tropic Thunder” was the third R-rated comedy to open solidly in recent weeks, following “Pineapple Express” and “Step Brothers.” Most summer comedies are rated PG-13, since an R rating limits the audience by requiring anyone younger than 17 to come with an adult.

“We’re thrilled, quite frankly. It played out exactly how we hoped,” said DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan. “Tropic Thunder” raised its total to $37 million since opening Wednesday.

Warner Bros. made the decision to postpone “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” until July 17th of next year. Obviously this has angered many fans - but they aren’t the only ones who are mad. Warner Bros. did not include anyone else in their swift decision and Entertainment Weekly released their new issue talking all about the new movie and stating that it would be released this fall. We were surprised that they were not informed due to the fact that they are the studio’s parent company.

The magazine leads off the issue with a six-page spread pegged to “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which Warner Bros. on Thursday moved from its Nov. 21 release date to July 17, 2009. The studio had been considering the date change for three or four weeks, “but it really didn’t kind of get on the front burner until sometime within the last seven days,” Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Sunday.

Entertainment Weekly’s “deadline must have been earlier than the decision, than when we started to get serious about making the decision,” Fellman said. An Entertainment Weekly spokeswoman did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment. The magazine’s online edition added a preface about the date change to the “Harry Potter” story. It also had a laugh or two about the lack of communication between two Time Warner outfits.

“In an irony sure to set blogger hearts beating giddily, the film graces the cover of EW’s new fall preview issue,” reads an entry on the magazine’s Hollywood Insider blog. “EW and Warner Bros. share a parent company, but they clearly do not share, you know, important … information.”

The blog goes on to joke that the date change will leave Entertainment Weekly “readers in possession of a ‘Dewey Beats Truman’ collectible.” It also notes that British film magazine Empire features Harry Potter on its current cover, though that issue touches on big 2009 releases, as well.

WB announced the date if release for November 21st and released the teaser trailer. Many of the fans flocked to AOL and YouTube to check out the new trailer and get a taste of what is to come.

However, plans have suddenly shifted. According to sources from WB “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will now be released July 17th, 2009. The move was made to take advantage of an open weekend in Hollywood’s busy summer season, said Alan Horn, Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer. The film had been on schedule, and the change was not due to any production snags, he said.

“The picture is completely, absolutely, 100 percent on schedule, on time. There were no delays,” Horn told The Associated Press. “I’ve seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November.”

The switch will mean a two-year lag between the film adaptations of books five and six in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series. But it will shorten fans’ wait between “Half-Blood Prince” and the final two installments, which are being shot simultaneously next year.

Needless to say fans are now in an uproar - but they were not the only ones who were caught off guard. Just this week Entertainment Weekly released an article concerning the movie and they were still expecting the movie to be released this fall.

Angelina Jolie just had twins - but that doesn’t keep her out of the movie business for long. She is being asked to take over for the lead part in the new Columbia spy thriller. Originally they were looking at Tom Cruise for the part - but it looks as if they are taking the movie in a whole new direction.

Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer will redraft the screenplay, about a CIA officer who must prove she is not a Russian sleeper spy out to assassinate the president, to suit Jolie. Phillip Noyce remains attached to “Salt” as director. The title also will change.

The project has a long history, with directors coming and going, though Cruise has long been tethered to it.
Jolie also is attached to star in “Atlas Shrugged,” an adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel. She intends to do both, though in what order remains unclear.

Looks like Iron Man has taken great offense to the new “Dark Knight” Batman movie. Robert Downey Jr. plays Iron Man one of the newest superheroes to hit the theatres. It is clear that Batman is still the one on top due to the amount that it has pulled in and the popularity of it. In fact there are rumors that the movie could be up for an Oscar.

The Ironman star lashed out at the Batman sequel and compared it to the engine of a Ferrari. He told MovieHole: “The Dark Knight is like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and scriptwriting and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’”

The actor who also complained that he probably needed a college education to fully understand the film. “I didn’t understand it, I still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and, in the end, they need him to be a bad guy.”

Is that the nasty head of jealousy that we see coming out?
