‘Brokeback Mountain’ Makes It Way To New York Opera
‘Brokeback Mountain’ – based off of the short story by Annie Proulx – became an instant Academy Award winning movie. It is now being taken to new height and being turned into an opera. The general manager for the New York City Opera – Gerard Mortier – announced that the composer Charles Wuorinen will be writing the opera version of the story. It will be ready by the 2013 spring season.
“Ever since encountering Annie Proulx’s extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it,” Wuorinen said in a statement.
This opera will be the second company world premier for the composer. His first was “Haroun and the Sea of Stories” an adaptation of the Salman Rushdie novel and was premiered in 2004.
